Antique Carved Lao Buddha

Many religious shrines and Buddhist monasteries existed in and around the natural caves found in the region of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, the area formed by Northern Thailand, Laos and Burma. This wonderful wood Buddha, in the mudra of Bhumisparsa, or calling the earth to witness, is carved from a single piece of wood. Remnants of the original black and red lacquer, as well as the gold leaf are still apparent on the surface. The Buddha shows surface erosion to the wood and applied gilt, and the base has been lost from the years in a moist enclosed cave shrine. This is a true and beautiful representation of the Lao Buddha
