Laotian women weave these long beautiful textiles on looms out of silk on a base of cotton, where it is an important cultural and financial part of traditional village life. Most of the textiles take between two to three weeks to complete, and are traditionally worn over their shoulder when visiting the Buddhist temples, and oftentimes left as gifts to the monks. Because each piece is completely handmade, the surfaces are not perfect, but instead show the beautiful characteristics and nubs of hand-woven and dyed silk and cotton. Knotted fringe adorns each end of the textiles. There are two sizes: the one on the left is 15 1/2" x 67", the two on the right are almost double the width, 29" x 67". The textiles are incredibly beautiful on the wall or as a table runner or cover.
