Antique Burmese Teak Burmese Devotees
These are a rare matched pair of 19th c. Burmese monks, or Devotees, carved from solid teak, covered in black lacquer, and applied gold leaf. The Buddha's attendants are in the posture of praying and would have been placed on either side of a central Buddha image. The backs of the bases are covered in red lacquer and inscribed in black lacquer with Pali sacred Buddhist texts. The Devotees are in wonderful condition, showing only wear from years of devotional use.
Measurement: 6 1/2" high (16.5 cm)
