Antique Burmese Silver Betelnut Container

Betelnut is a mild stimulant that is chewed throughout Asia.  It is normally mixed with powdered slaked lime (calcium hydroxide), which was carried in this box as seen by the residue. This fine19th century box was formed from high content silver with a decorative repousse top featuring a mythological animal. The beautiful box has a gorgeous patina - a beautiful work of ethnographic art.
