19th c. Retablo Virgen de la Candelaria This antique South American retablo depicts the Madonna, or Virgen (Virgin) de la Candelaria holding the Christ Child, or Niño and her attribute candle. The Virgin is also known as Mamacha Candelaria and she is associated with Lake Titicaca as the birth of the Incan empire and the cult of the earth, Pachamama. The Virgen is finely painted with oil on tin and depicted standing above the earth with the Bolivian flag draped at her feet in the shape of the luna or moon. The painting is in excellent condition with minimal loss and the gold pan de oro highlights on her robe and crown are beautiful. The retablo is a wonderful Spanish colonial devotional item.
