Embroidered Pulya from India

The Lumbani gypsy women of India wear embroidered textiles on the back of their heads. They adorn these embroidered panels with cowrie shells that have their backs broken off for protective powers. This is an old example of the intricate embroidery that once adorned the hair of a Lumbani woman. The textile is in immaculate condition, some of the cowries are missing from the tassels from the years of use.
