19th c. Escudo de Monja, Nun's Relicario

This is a beautiful and rare 19th c. Nun's relicario known as an Escudo de Monja. In most cases a Nun would wear an escudo which represented her particular devotion to a Saint or to the Virgin Madonna. This large relicario depicts a beautiful Virgin and Child meticulously painted on tin and framed in a silver case (the glass is replacement). The robes of the Madonna have applied gold leaf and the inscription at the bottom dates the relicario to 1879. There is minor loss to the relicario, probably from the time the glass was broken or replaced, otherwise this wonderful relicario is a rare devotional treasure!
