19th C. Spanish Colonial Silver Shield for Archangel Michael, San Miguel

Presented is a beautiful 19th c. Spanish colonial shield that at one time adorned a large carved San Miguel Archangel Santo. The Angel Michael is usually depicted with a helmet and holding a shield and sword. The large shield is hand constructed from high content silver using deep repoussé with traditional Spanish colonial foliate designs. The handle on the back is also hand constructed with handmade "joiners". The shield is in excellent condition with only minor losses to the edge, making this a rare and wonderful treausre of Spanish colonial art in the new world.
