Antique Spanish Colonial Alabaster Relicario

This is a beautiful early 19th century double sided relicario from South America. The image of an archangel with a child has been meticulously carved and painted on one side. The same piece of alabaster, or piedra de huamanga has the highly detailed and polychromed image of the crowned Virgen and Christ Niño on the obverse. The alabaster also shows beautiful gilding to the Madonna's robes and the wings of the Archangel. The detailing on the carving is spectacular, the photographs simply don't capture the intensity of the colors, and intricacy of the carving. This wonderful relicario is displayed in the original thick hand formed silver case with the images protected under glass. This is indeed a beautiful and rare devotional treasure!
