Antique Church Elder's Cofradia Processional Staff

This is a rare wood and silver processional baton, or staff, called a vara cane from Bolivia. These types of staffs are normally carried in processions by the Church elders, or leaders of the Cofradia, a type of church brotherhood of elder statesmen. The staff is formed from a wood called chonta and embellished with a repoussed silver cap with traditional colonial designs and crosses around the sides and a beautiful representation of a Spanish colonial cross on the top. A small bronze cross hangs from a handmade chain on the side. This is a wonderful devotional item from South America.
