18/19th Century Colonial Virgen

This is a finely carved Portuguese Colonial santo from Brazil, Nossa Senhora da Conceição. This beautiful santa is highly detailed and has a baroque quality that is reflected in the "estofado" style, typical of 18th century and early 19th century santos. The Madonna is carved from wood, polychromed with gold gilt detailing, and attached to a base. She is further adorned with a beautiful crown and glass eyes. She is in fine condition with minimal loss of paint and her hands are in tact.. This santa is a beautiful devotional piece, deeply rooted in Portuguese history and is an important facet of culture and religion in the New World.
