Rare Wood Ex Voto from Brazil This is a fantastic and rare ex voto from northeastern Brazil. The ex votos, or milagres (Portuguese milagros) in the predominately Afro-Brazilian area of northern Brazil are uniquely carved from wood and frequently reflect the art of West Africa. The wooden figures, like most ex votos and milagros, are commissioned by a devotee and brought to a church as an offering for a promise fulfilled, frequently for health. This ex voto has extensive gashes on the top of the head, perhaps reflective of the owner's head injury.
